Centre for Sight conducts free eye check-up camp at Make My Trip
Centre for Sight, group of eye hospitals conducted a free eye check-up camp at Make My Trip, Gurgaon. A large number of young men and women in the camp came forward to know about LASIK, a refractive surgery procedure for vision correction to remove spectacles. Dr Aditi Aggarwal, Cornea Specialist, Centre for Sight explained how LASIK reshapes cornea reducing the need for wearing glasses for vision correction. “Over the past few years, LASIK has become very popular and delivers more precise result than the earlier laser procedure which treated the surface of cornea. LASIK treats tissue of the cornea and reshapes it in a manner that reduces myopia (minus power), hyperopia (plus power) and astigmatism (cylindrical power). Worldwide many leading celebrities and sports personalities have gone ahead with LASIK and seen a drastic change in their lives.”
LASIK procedure is painless takes just a couple of minutes or less and is done under topical anesthesia where only drops are put in the eye to numb the cornea. Visual recovery is rapid and there is little or no post-operative pain.
With technological advancement LASIK it has gone bladeless and has now become iLASIK. Dr Aggarwal said, “Rather than a steel blade as used in LASIK, an ultra-fast femtosecond laser is used to create a corneal flap which is then folded back to allow the second laser to reshape the cornea to correct the vision based on the exact specification of your eyes on the basis of your personal vision profile.” It is FDA approved and treats the broadest range of vision imperfections possible, including mild-to-severe nearsightedness, farsightedness and all types of astigmatism. It is considered to be safe and effective.
While most spectacle wearers are suitable candidates for LASIK, there are exceptions, like people who have weak or thin corneas. They may need to opt for other refractive surgeries such as phakic IOLs
According to experts around 16 million LASIK procedures have been done worldwide over 15 years. LASIK vision correction has the highest patient satisfaction rate of any elective surgery: 95.4 per cent, according to a 10-year survey of scientific studies from around the world. LASIK and iLASIK have proved to be a boon for those who have been hiding behind their glasses for years.
